A new outboard motor for their inflatable rescue boat will help the dedicated lifesavers at Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club to keep beachgoers safe this summer, thanks to funding from the Milford Community Connection Program.
The grant is supporting the purchase of a 25hp motor, which will strengthen the club’s patrol readiness ahead of the peak season. These inflatable rescue boats, or IRBs, are a critical part of lifesaving operations, with around 25% of all rescues carried out using them.
A Lifelong Connection to the Coast
Financial adviser Andrew Buhk, Director at AJB Financial Solutions, nominated the club for the grant. His connection runs deep: his grandfather was a founding member of the club in 1924, and both his parents are life members. Andrew is now a life member himself and has been actively involved in lifesaving since childhood.
“I’ve been a member since I was seven and involved with the club and lifesaving across the country for almost 50 years,” he says. “Our club tries not just to develop great lifesavers but also great members of the community.”
Still a regular on reserve patrols and an active coach for masters and parents, Andrew volunteers his time to help others build confidence in the surf and develop the skills that save lives.
Essential Equipment for Demanding Conditions
Alex SLSC operates in challenging surf environments, and its IRB takes a heavy beating. The new motor will help ensure the club has reliable equipment ready to go when it’s needed most.
“The environment we operate in is extremely hard on the motors and craft,” says Andrew. “A new motor helps ensure we always have operational rescue craft for the coming summer.”
The Milford grant has allowed the club to move quickly on this essential upgrade, improving its operational readiness heading into the busy season.
A Welcome Boost for a Volunteer-Led Club
When Andrew was told the grant had been approved, his reaction was instant: “We’re very happy! It’s support like this that helps to save lives on our beaches.”
Alex SLSC is built on generations of service, dedication, and community spirit, so for Andrew, being part of the Milford Community Connection Program goes beyond funding – it’s a meaningful show of support for the people and places local advisers care about.
“Milford takes the time to understand the communities that we work in and how they can contribute beyond normal business,” he says. “Each time Milford has supported us, it has helped with either the direct delivery of services or our involvement with community programs.”
