With help from the Milford Community Connection Program, Moonee Valley Football Club is putting mental health front and centre by launching a new wellbeing initiative for its players, families, and wider club community.
Backing a Club with Heart
Michael Milne, Director of Milne Capital, nominated the Melbourne-based club for funding after more than 15 years of personal involvement. His journey began when his sons joined the Under 10s, and today he proudly serves as Club President. Over the years, his commitment has deepened alongside the club’s growth and evolving needs.
“My aim has always been to leave the club in better shape than I found it,” says Michael. “Even when the work is challenging or inconvenient, it always leads to something valuable.”
A Grassroots Investment in Mental Health
When the Committee identified a growing need for mental health support, the club decided to take action. The grant has been used to appoint and train four wellbeing officers – approachable, compassionate individuals now equipped to provide meaningful support across the club’s large and diverse membership.
“It means we can now take concrete steps towards supporting the well-being of our community,” says Michael.
Making an Immediate Impact
With over 600 players – from 120 Auskickers to 170 senior players (40% of whom are female) – the club is a hub for players, parents, volunteers and supporters. The new wellbeing officers are now embedded within that community, creating a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
“Every dollar goes directly to the cause and makes an immediate impact,” Michael explains. “Our club is nimble and can make things happen quickly without delays or red tape.”
Looking Ahead with Purpose
This new initiative represents the start of a deeper cultural shift for Moonee Valley Football Club, with long-term hopes of embedding wellbeing support into the fabric of community sport.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Milford,” says Michael. “Their support will have a real impact and make a difference to someone’s life. That’s something we’re proud to be part of.”
